“Communicating Who We Are and What We Do”

There are many challenges people with developmental disabilities face, not being in control of their ability to communicate and social interaction can be one of them. As you can see by this picture, Karen is extremely happy with her recording button. This button allows up to seventy seconds of recording time, and then when she touches the button the sounds play back. Karen receives a lot of joy from being able to choose when and what to communicate. This assistive technology called a “Red Button” was purchased using United Way of Marion County funds. We rarely find a company willing to donate assistive technology because most of the companies operate on a low profit margin.
Businesses are asked to give money repeatedly. At times it may feel as if donations are expected and not appreciated. Karen is one of three hundred and eighty-eight customers that Resource Connections of Oregon (RCO) serves in Linn, Marion, and Yamhill County. Karen, Karen’s family, and RCO wanted you to know that this donation was truly appreciated. Donations make a difference.
“Taking Pride in Who We Are and What We Do”
Although there are many challenges people with developmental disabilities face, having something to take pride in is a big motivator. As you can see by this picture, John is extremely happy with his bike donated by Santiam Bicycle in Salem. This bike is a big part of John’s transportation. John takes a lot of pride in showing everyone his new mode of transportation. A few of our staff members have spotted John cleaning and wiping down his new bike as he waits for the bus. John tells us that he is starting to lose weight because he enjoys riding his new bike.

Josh is an RCO customer, and this is what he had to say about his three wheeled bike:"I like my new bike. I will ride it more this spring, if there aren't too many storms."
The bike was purchased with RCO Emergency Flex-Funds.
